Rudolph

Today my dog looked at me with the most touching, emotional expression. He had the look of a man who just found out that his long-lost brother was alive and well. Perhaps the look of a parent seeing his newborn baby for the first time. I was handing him a beef rib bone.

Tonight I left the house to go to the Laundromat and run some other errands. I had a big basket filled with laundry, and I took Susie's rope bone, to which she has an unhealthy attachment, and added it to the basket so I could wash and dry it.

It turned out that my other errands took longer than I thought, so I never made it to the Laundromat. I left the basket of laundry, including the rope bone, in the car to do tomorrow.

So when I came in, I took Suze for a walk, then came back and changed into my pajamas. I started playing with Susie, jumping around and wrestling with her; she did what she always does and began searching for the rope bone so we could play fetch and tug-of-war. She looked all over my room, sticking her nose into unlikely corners. Then she looked behind the bed, pushing the mattress and box spring away from the wall so she could see if it had fallen behind the bed as it so often does. Then she ran downstairs and checked the bathroom, kitchen and hallway. She came back upstairs and looked all over my room again.

While she looked, she periodically came back, stood in front of me and panted, as if to say, "Where is it, Mama?" This whole time I was laughing my ass off. I know it's mean, but I couldn't help it. It wasn't like I could explain to her that it was out in the car and that I was not about to go get it for her while wearing my footie (yeah) pajamas.

Perhaps next weekend we'll take the puppies to the levee...
